Academic contributors
Tomonori Nagayama
Professor
Dr. Tomonori Nagayama is an professor at the department of Civil Engineering at the University of Tokyo. He is a recipient of 2007 ASCE Raymond C. Reese Research Prize and 2010 JSCE annual incentive award. His research achievement include this DRIMS development and structural monitoring using wireless sensor network.
Masashi Toyoda
Professor
Dr. Masashi Toyoda is a professor at Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo. He has been conducting research on analyzing and visualizing wide variety of big data. He developed the DRIMS data management and visualization system.
Kai Xue
Postdoctoral Researcher
Dr. Kai Xue received his PhD degree in Civil Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan, in 2018. He subsequently joined Dr. Nagayama’s group in the University of Tokyo, working towards automatic-based DRIMS development until now. He is specialized in the field of smart structure.
Boyu Zhao
Data Analysis Expert (-2018.3)
Dr. Boyu Zhao received his PhD degree from the University of Tokyo. He is a recipient of Dean’s award in engineering school due to his achievements in the research of hump-based DRIMS. He is specialized in the fields of data processing, monitoring technology and IoT research in civil engineering.
History
- 2001 A prototype of Vehicle Intelligent Monitoring System(VIMS) has been developed at the bridge and structure laboratory, the University of Tokyo.
- 2002 Patent application by Prof. Fujino, Tokyo metropolitan expressway, and Highway Technology Research Center on the road condition evaluation system.
- 2005 Research project on an inexpensive and frequency road and joint evaluation system using road patrol vehicles, funded by MLIT, Japan.
- 2006 A prototype of VIMS to evaluate IRI and joint unevenness. Visualization with mapping of evaluation results.
- 2007 Algorithmic development using random vibration theory.
- 2009 Development of a Hump calibration test (drive test to calibrate a quarter car model) International deployment (Surveys in the Philippines and Kyrgyz).
- 2012 Dr. Oshima at Kyoto University, in collaboration with Dr. Nagayama, introduced VIMS to Kenyan National Highway Authority, which initiated the use of VIMS in Kenya as a part of JICA project.
- 2013 Establishment of VIMS consortium. VIMS became commercially available.
- 2014 The name of the system is changed from VIMS to DRIMS (Dynamic Response Intelligent Monitoring System). The name was filed for trademark registration. The name of consortium is also changed to DRIMS consortium.
- 2014 -2019 As one of projects under the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), DRIMS was studied. Under SIP infrastructure, JIP Technoseience Inc. and three laboratories at the University of Tokyo are funded for the project “Research, Development, and Social Implementation of Screening Technologies on Pavement and Bridges based on Large-scale Sensor Information Fusion toward Preventive Maintenance of Infrastructure”. The research developments include extension of the system to smartphones, the adaptation of a half-car model, time-domain algorithm to evaluate road profile using a Kalman filter, automatic calibration of the half-car model using ordinary drive records, large scale implementation and visualization.

Four university members 1) Dr. Miyashita at Nagaoka University of Technology, 2) Dr. Nagayama at the University of Tokyo, 3) Dr. Nishikawa at Nagasaki University, and 4) Dr. Oshima at Kyoto University held the first meeting to establish a consortium. Vehicle Intelligent Monitoring System (VIMS), originally developed at the University of Tokyo, had been further advanced by the four members. To clarify the contributions of these members and coordinate the research efforts, this consortium was established. Also, because social implementation, feedback, and other involvement by non-university members are important for the engineering development of the technology, the participation of non-university members in the consortium was considered essential.
